Runner Spotlight - Tracy Keller

September 28, 2026 Camille Estes

How and why did you start running and how many years have you been running?

Running has been a solid companion of mine for over 30 years! (I started running competitively in grade school and have been running ever since!) Sometimes, we are on great terms – running consistently, racing successfully. Other times, running is on the back burner – it’s too cold or too hot; my sleep is rocked by a rough night with the baby; other bits of life take over. I always find my way back to it though. And running is always there when I’m ready to lace up my shoes again.

Why did you decide to do the Polar Bear Grand Prix?

The Polar Bear Grand Prix is a nice “in between” racing series to keep you moving during the holidays and colder months so you don’t start your Spring race training too cold. This year, some friends decided to run the races together before we take on the Kentucky Derby Festival marathon relay.

Favorite distance?

Growing up, I was the “distance” runner. From cross country to track; 5ks to marathons, I’ve done it all! I’ve always enjoyed the 10k. It is the perfect distance for me – not too short like a 5k, which is all about speed and not too long where you need more strategy and planning for your race. You can settle into a nice pace and then kick it into gear that last mile for a strong finish.

Favorite place to run?

As Louisville runners, we are so lucky to have so many amazing parks in our city that provide us with peaceful and safe paths for our feet to land. But it’s an easy choice for me as to favorite place to run – Cherokee Park! I’ve run around the Scenic Loop hundreds of times since moving to Louisville. The hills don’t scare me nearly as much as they used to, but they are still brutal! And running across a deer or owl is always a welcome sight!

Favorite or most unique race you have run?

I’ve run so many races throughout the years and many memorable ones at that. But my favorite race has been the 2025 Urban Bourbon Half Marathon. It was my first long distance race in 7 years! (COVID and two babies had put a halt to my long-distance racing days.) Having once been a marathoner – and 2x Boston qualifier – I questioned if I’d ever do this distance again! Motherhood has been wonderful but has taken a toll on my motivation and energy to run (let alone train for a half marathon!) It’s been tough finding the time to squeeze in the miles with two little guys under 3 at home. But I had some encouraging friends and a racing partner who kept me accountable and focused. And this race was extra special as now I had two guests cheering me on at the finish line – my kiddos! I didn’t realize how special the race would be with them watching, but, when I saw them, I got the burst of energy I needed to finish the race strong! They now are my biggest reasons to keep moving and improving my health through running. I don’t have to be the fastest runner for them. Showing up for myself is important to ensure I can show up for them in meaningful ways as they grow up.

Favorite thing about running?

Running is always there for me. I could go months (or even years) without racing (or even training) and can always jump back in (albeit more slowly). It meets me where I am and grows with me as I evolve over time. I get out of it what I put into it. When I’m focused and committed, I see the results! When I’m more casual with my runs, I feel that, too. I don’t need a fancy gym – just my shoes and the road ahead of me!

Do you have any running/walking advice you'd like to offer?

Just keep at it – you don’t have to be the fastest in the race or even the fastest version of yourself on race day! Be easy on yourself if you don’t get a PR or just aren’t running like you used to. We are lucky to have breath in our lungs, strength in our feet and the ability to try. And remember, the road is always there for you – wherever you are – for you to travel down at whatever pace is right for you.

Why do you like running River City Races events?

The River City Races have a strong history in Louisville. They are fun, well-organized and filled with runners of all abilities who are looking for fellowship with other runners and a good time.

Anything else you'd like to share?

I told some friends I felt funny being featured since I haven’t been consistently running for a while. But they reminded me that I am a runner – and a working mom of two who is navigating life in a hectic world. I think it is important for us all to be easy on ourselves. We don’t have to be the fastest out there or the one who runs the longest to be a runner. I’m proud of everyone who tries, and I’m proud of myself, too!
