How and why did you start running and how many years have you been running?
First mini was 1981, on a $50.00 bet with my office mates. Ran 27 Minis overall (quit the Mini when it was moved out of the park), numerous PJ's, several Run for the Arts, and most of the Hangovers. My group (old guys) stopped running with the onset of Covid. We started back with the Polar Bear this year, but now we are walkers. Even before, though, we were not high speed competitors.
Why did you decide to do the Polar Bear Grand Prix?
Started the Polar Bear many years ago, because there were few winter events, and it is a nice trilogy.
Favorite distance?
No real favorite. One though, was the Hangover 10 Mile
Favorite place to run?
Favorite place - historically the 10K from Seneca to Cherokee, and the several courses at Iroquois.
Favorite or most unique race you have run?
Most unique - the two Zombie runs, Cherokee and Iroquois. We enjoyed being attacked by good looking young lady Zombies from the LePetomane players.
Favorite thing about running?
The preservative effect on the body. I'm 80, my legs still work. Secondly the camaraderie among the recreational runners back in the middle of the pack. Gene Priddy for example.
Do you have any running/walking advice you'd like to offer?
Advice: Stay with it, it keeps you healthy and alive, winning is not the objective, although if you do keep running into your old age, you will start picking up awards just by finishing. My running buddy and I placed third in our respective age groups in the 4 miler, just by walking and finishing.
Why do you like running River City Races events?
Organization.
Anything else you'd like to share?
If you start fairly young, you will end up with a closet full of shirts. I gave several hundred, mostly brand new, to the Volunteers last year.
