Runner Spotlight - Alyson Cuyjet

How and why did you start running and how many years have you been running?

I started running in 2012, when I gave Couch to 5k a try just to see if I could do it. I ran my first race, and just never stopped!

Why did you decide to do the Polar Bear Grand Prix?

The three races of the Polar Bear Grand Prix are a great reason to get out and keep training over the winter. I’m a completionist, so I’m always going to do all three if I can. Every year, It’s fun to see if I can place in my age group — and showing up to all the races is half the battle.

Favorite distance?

I honestly like them all, from the mile to the marathon. I haven’t tried an ultra yet, but maybe some day.

Favorite place to run?

I love running when I’m on vacation! I really enjoy getting out and exploring a new place on foot. Going for a run early in the morning is a great way to get a glimpse of what daily life is like as people just go about their normal routines.

Favorite or most unique race you have run?

The 2024 London Marathon was my favorite race of all time: The weather was great, the crowds of spectators were unreal, and there was a a pint and a plate of fish and chips waiting for me after I finished. Can’t get much better than that.

Favorite thing about running?

The routine is really helpful for me. And it’s nice to be reminded that I can do hard things. The running community is a huge plus, as well!

Do you have any running/walking advice you'd like to offer?

Slow down! Easy runs easy, hard runs hard. And get more sleep! (I’m trying to take my own advice, but that’s often easier said than done).

Why do you like running River City Races events?

I like the community feel that River City Races brings to events. Free photos are a nice perk. The staff and volunteers are great, and Brian’s finally learned how to pronounce my last name!

Anything else you'd like to share?

Anyone who’s run the Polar Bear Grand Prix a few times knows that the weather can be wildly unpredictable. Will there be ice? Will I be able to wear shorts? Who knows! One year the Frostbite 5k was so cold that I ran straight through the finish line and didn’t stop until I got back to my car.
